What is Walk and Talk Therapy and How Does It Work?

Walk and Talk Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that incorporates walking outdoors while talking about issues and problem-solving with your therapist. Depending on your preferences, your therapist may also incorporate aspects of mindfulness that integrates physical movement and observation of your natural surroundings.

Where do sessions take place?

Walk and Talk Therapy at our office tends to take place in the parks and streets around the office. Your therapist will review specific information about where you will be going prior to each session, however the outdoor areas around The Growth and Wellness Therapy Centre will be the primary location.

Is Walk and Talk Therapy considered exercise?

While movement may be a benefit to clients physically, the focus is not about exercise. Prior to engaging in Walk and Talk Therapy, clients will be in good physical condition and do not suffer from any known disability or condition which would prevent or limit their participation in Walk and Talk Therapy.

Clients will take full responsibility for their medical and physical well-being during each session.

How does confidentiality work when we are outside?

Participating in Walk and Talk Therapy and being out in public involves some limits to confidentiality, including the possibility that other people may hear parts of our conversation. Your therapist will do everything that they can to protect your confidentiality during Walk and Talk Therapy sessions. If you choose to participate in Walk and Talk Therapy, you and your therapist will discuss any concerns and how you would prefer to handle potential risks to confidentiality. You may change your mind at any point in the session and can return to the office.

What are some known risks of Walk and Talk Therapy?

Although this is not exercise or workout training, Walk and Talk therapy may involve strenuous physical activity including, but not limited to, cardiovascular activity. Aside from the limits to confidentiality outlined above, outdoor environments also contain a variety of hazards which include traffic, insects, and slippery walking surfaces.
