Meet Henry Voskuil, MSW Intern: Focused on Supporting You with Authenticity
It’s September which means our new cohort of interns has joined us for the coming semesters! We’re going to be sharing more about all of them with you, but to start with we have Henry Voskuil who is joining us from the MSW program at the University of Toronto. He’ll be with us supporting children, teens and adults with issues of self-esteem, trauma, grief, stress and more.
What drew you to the field of social work?
What drew me to the field of social work primarily was my grandmother's charitable organization she founded. She always inspired me by teaching me that helping others in society through meaningful work is a rewarding way to make a living.
What would you say to someone who was nervous about their first appointment?
I would validate/normalize their nerves as being healthy, and that I as a "clinician" share similar feelings of nervousness for entering this rapport-building dynamic. Then I would transition to say that 'nerves = caring ', and that that's positive. I would direct focus towards that.
What's your favourite way to spend the weekend?
I like to spend the weekend being active with friends and family. I like to play tennis, basketball, go on long bikerides and also runs, mostly I try to get outside and explore different parts of the city via athletic means on weekends!
How do you take care of your own mental health?
With a specific self-care routine that works for me. Consisting of daily exercise, prioritizing socializing with friends, connecting with family as often as I can, and indulging in hobbies like: movie watching, playing sports, writing music, etc.
Do you have a favourite quote?
At Bellwood, the Toronto addictions facility I worked at, a coworker who was 7 years in recovery said to me once, "Be careful Henry, your expectations may be resentments in waiting". I liked this a lot, and to this day I reference it :)
What's something you want potential clients to know about you?
I would want potential clients to know that I am committed to honesty and authenticity.
