Everything You've Wanted to Know About Massage Therapy Appointments
We sat down with one of our Registered Massage Therapists, Angelyn Fullante, RMT, to chat about some of the most frequently asked questions clients have about Registered Massage Therapy appointments. Here’s what she had to share!
What is massage therapy?
Massage therapy works the body’s soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, connective tissue, etc.) to help achieve a client’s needs (relaxation, stress reduction, injury, blood flow/circulation, decrease pain, etc.). Different techniques are incorporated based on the indication for treatment such as general Swedish massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, deep tissue, sports massage, stretching, etc.
What are the benefits of massage therapy?
Some benefits include stress reduction, increased blood flow and circulation, relief from tense or painful muscles, improved mental and emotional wellbeing, improved mood and overall quality of life. It can also benefit more specific conditions like chronic headaches, back pain, arthritis, etc.
How do I prepare for a massage session?
Arrive early and in comfortable clothing. You may be asked to undress to your level of comfort, though sheets and towels are used for privacy. For those with long hair, it is preferred that it be tied back for better access to the head, neck and shoulders, however it is up to the discretion of the client.
How do I communication with my therapist during the massage?
Providing your therapist with feedback is important. As your therapist checks in with your level of comfort and how you are, ensure that you are telling them about pressure preferences, any painful areas and if something feels uncomfortable. This will allow your therapist to tailor the session exactly to your needs.
What should I expect during a massage?
The massage therapist will typically begin by asking about your health history and the reason you are seeking massage therapy. The therapist will then use a variety of techniques to address your concerns. The therapist will also ask you to communicate your level of comfort throughout the massage.
Is massage therapy safe for everyone?
Generally, massage therapy is safe, however there are conditions that are either cautioned or contraindicated. Therefore, all medical concerns should be discussed with your family doctor and communicated with your therapist.
Are there any risks associated with massage therapy?
There can be some risks for certain people such as bruising, soreness, mild discomfort and light headedness. As a result, it is important to share any medical concerns/conditions with your therapist beforehand that may influence the effects of massage.
What should I do after a massage?
A good rule of thumb is to avoid any strenuous activity immediately afterward. Some people may experience soreness a day or two after their massage, which is typical, but should be accounted for when resuming daily activities.
