About This Group:
Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence based clinical intervention for people who have experienced complex trauma. It has been used as an adjunctive with talk therapy.
TCSTY is based in Hatha Yoga with foundations of Trauma Therapy and Neuroscience.
This program will run for 8 weeks, with a brief intake done with the office prior to registration. Participants must be 18+ and be seeing a mental health professional either at or outside of the Centre. During the program duration, participants who do not have a therapist will have access to an Intern therapist at the Centre, at no cost. Once the program has ended there may be additional costs incurred should you wish to continue with the therapist.
This class is run in person, online, and via a hybrid model. The Fall 2024 Program will run in person only. If you are interested in the next online group (eta Winter 2025), please reach out to the office to be added to the waitlist.
The class will have no hands-on assistance, rather, it emphasizes choice making, invitational language and non-coercion, to help cultivate a relationship with one’s body and to create an experience of empowerment. The facilitator will also be participating in the movement to share in an authentic experience. During the class there will be offerings to notice interception in our body, bringing our attention to the present moment.
There is no prior experience needed in yoga to participate, and modifications are offered throughout the class. At the end of the movement component, there will be a resting component, followed by an opportunity to reflect on your experience and to learn more about components of TCTSY.
Materials Needed
Materials to participate will be provided for in person groups, though you are welcome to bring your own yoga mat, water bottle, and any items you need to make yourself comfortable. If you are participating online you will want to have with you a yoga mat, a water bottle, and any additional items you would need to feel comfortable. If you have yoga blocks, you are invited to bring them and use them in your practice as needed, as well as anything you may need for grounding such as a light sweater or blanket for shavasana. Assistance will be provided in setting up your area at the beginning of class.
Participation Requirements
Participants must be 18+ and residing in Ontario. Participants must be seeing a mental health professional either at or outside of the Centre for support, as this is not a trauma processing group and things may come up for participants while engaging in the program. During the program duration, participants who do not have a therapist will have access to an Intern therapist at the Centre to fulfill this requirement, at no cost.
