Recently we released the news of our upcoming MBCT Program, facilitated by Ashley Davidson, MSW RSW and Katherine Hall, MSW RSW. Since then, we have had many of you reach out an inquire about what MBCT is, and what is involved in the program we are offering. Ashley Davidson took some time to sit down with us and further shed some light on this very exciting program!

What is Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy?

  • a therapy approach that combines Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness practices to support mental health

  • an evidence-based therapy that is effective in managing and reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms

  • an approach that helps build awareness and tolerance to negative sensations and experiences so that we respond and not react

  • a space to work on individual goals and build a self-care routine

What are the next steps once I sign up for the class?

Once you sign up to attend the 7-week MBCT group you will do an initial intake with admin and be scheduled a 15-30 minute one-on-one individual meeting with either Ashley or Nicole. In these meetings we will spend a bit more time getting to know you – your goals, past mindfulness experiences, discussing triggers. You’ll also get more information about the group, and it will also be a space to have any questions you have answered.

Do I need to have a therapist or be connected with another professional while taking part in the program?

It is not mandatory but it is recommended for all of our participants to be connected with their own individual therapist while participating in the program in case that you would like to debrief after a group or need someone to speak with. Mindfulness exercises focus on being present with and bringing awareness to different body sensations, thoughts, and emotions; sometimes you may notice “difficult” sensations arising. While discussion is an important part of the group, we will not be doing any emotional processing or debriefing. We want to make sure that there is space with someone to discuss your experiences.

Are there activities or “homework” between sessions? Is this mandatory?

We prefer to call it “home practice”. For each session there is a workbook with suggestions for practices you do each week. In order to help build those mindfulness skills and notice change, it is highly recommended that you try these things out on your own – of course with what suits your schedule. You may have to adapt, shorten, and or leave out some practices, but we encourage you to do your best to practice a bit!

What do I do if I start to feel overwhelmed emotionally in group?

This is a really important question. If you find yourself feeling triggered or upset in session, know that it is OK to take a break from the exercise or to modify it in a way that reduces intensity. One facilitator will always be available to speak with you in a break-out room if you need additional support. This is also something we can speak about in our one-to-one interviews to plan ahead.

Do I need experience in mindfulness ?

No previous experience with mindfulness is necessary. This group can support individuals with varied knowledge of mindfulness. Each session will offer psychoeducation about mindfulness, how it works, and incorporate different, meaningful themes each week.

As this is a group, am I expected to participate? Is active participating and talking during sessions mandatory?

Participation can look different for everyone, its about being engaged in the conversation. We will encourage a space for all to speak if they would like but the discussions are not mandatory and no one will have to share anything personal.

Am I required to appear participate with my video turned on?

We prefer that all participants keep their video on as it fosters a greater sense of community and aids in participation. However, if this is a concern of yours, please do not hesitate to speak to either Nicole or Ashley during the one-on-one meeting to discuss different circumstances.

We hope this helped answer some of your questions and encouraged you to enroll! To find out more, including how to register, please click here or call us and we will be more than happy to assist you.
