Meet Caroline Dsouza, Therapy Intern: Mindful, Empathetic and Enthusiastic About Therapy

Today we’re introducing you to Caroline Dsouza, one of our Therapy Interns for September. Caroline is joining us from the BREM program which is a bridging program for internationally-trained professionals, designed to facilitate their registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and grow their career in Canada. Caroline has her Master of Science in Clinical Psychology and will be working with children (4+), teens and adults around issues including trauma, neurodiversity, pain management, chronic illness, burnout and parent coaching.

What led you to becoming a therapist?

I grew up in a place where people didn't know much about mental health. As a teenager, I often helped my friends and cousins with their problems. This made me realize how important it is to have someone who listens and supports you, especially during crucial developmental years. In college, I fell in love with psychology and fully dove into this field learning more about an individual’s mind and emotional responses. My own experiences with mental health taught me that while I might not always have the answers, I can always be there to support my clients on their healing journeys.

What would you say to someone who is nervous about starting therapy?

Something that stood out to me in one of Brené Brown's talks was this “Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it's having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome.” Therapy is a beautiful journey of embracing one’s vulnerability. It is filled with chaos, compassion, and relief. I hope that when my clients see me, they will know that the space we create is safe and filled with courage without any judgment or even pressure to open up. Time and trust are two key elements in therapy and you as a client have full agency in this process.

What's your favourite way to spend a weekend?

Self-care is of utmost importance to me. Thus I spend my weekend doing exactly that, taking care of myself in the best way possible. Be it cooking an elaborate meal, hiking the beautiful trails, watching the sunset at Riverdale Park, exploring the city with my partner, hanging out with my friends or simply cuddling up in bed and watching a movie, I try to find joy in a good relaxed weekend.

What would you say to parents who are worried about their child's grades in school?

Your worry is valid and as parents, we want the best for our children and hope to see them succeed in every area. However, it's important to remember that academic performance is just one aspect of their development. Let's consider how your child is feeling. They might be experiencing stress or pressure that can affect their performance. They could also be gifted in certain subjects and need some assistance in other subjects. And let’s not forget that they experience many emotions growing up with their friends, family, their interests and dreams. Sometimes they may not be able to understand this wholly and get lost in overwhelming emotions. Rather than focusing solely on grades, we can work together to support and encourage your child's efforts and progress. Celebrate their strengths and achievements, no matter how small, and create an environment where they feel safe and motivated to learn. Open communication and positive reinforcement can help them feel more confident and less overwhelmed, leading them to perform their best!

What are you looking forward to the most about doing your practicum with Growth & Wellness?

As a psychotherapist intern at The Growth & Wellness Therapy Centre, I am most excited about the opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience while working with diverse client populations facing various mental health challenges. The supportive environment, characterized by regular supervision and collaborative learning with experienced therapists and fellow interns, will enhance my skills and confidence. Additionally, I look forward to facilitating group therapy sessions and offering accessible services to those in need, making a meaningful impact in the community. I hope this practicum will be a transformative experience, blending professional development with the chance to contribute to clients' lives positively.

What's something you want people to know about you?

I want people to know that I am deeply empathetic, mindful, and enthusiastic about our journey together, especially when working with little ones. I believe in the power of playfulness to create a safe and engaging therapeutic environment. Valuing the therapeutic relationship is central to my approach, as I hold each client in high regard and prioritize their unique needs and experiences. Additionally, I am strong in my faith and recognize the significant role spirituality plays in one’s life, which informs my understanding of holistic well-being. This combination of qualities allows me to foster meaningful connections and support my clients on their journey toward healing and growth.
