I've Never Been to Therapy Before - What Can I Expect?
Choosing to begin therapy is a huge step, which might be followed by some questions and unknowns as you venture into a new territory. We are here to help you through the process and have put together this guide so you know what to expect.
Once you reach out to us by phone or email, this is what the process will look like:
1) We’ll help you figure out which therapist to see. We will ask if you if you have a specific clinician in mind, or if you would like our help to find the best fit.
If you’ve looked through our website and chosen a clinician you would like to connect with we’ll help you connect with them to move forward with booking your consultation.
If you’re not sure which clinician or service is best suited to you, a member of the Intake team will conduct a brief call with you to get to know your needs a bit better. We’ll ask you about what you’re looking for, any accessibility or financial needs you may have, your availability, and anything else you might think is important.
2) We’ll book you in for a consultation. Once you've decided who to see we’ll help scheduling you in for a free 15 minute consultation with them. We will collect your contact information and set you up on our booking system for future appointments.
3) You meet with the therapist. During your consultation you can ask any questions you have and get to know the therapist. This isn’t a full therapy session so you may find you don’t have space or time to go over everything, but that’s okay - you’ll be able to get into it more in your first full session.
4) You decide on what you want to do next. Once you’ve met with the clinician, you can decide from there if you’d like to book regular 50-minute sessions with them, if you’d like to give it some time to think about it, or if you’d like to try doing a consultation with a different therapist. It’s completely up to you.
5) If you’ve decided to continue, you will then book your first full 50 minute session. This can be done through your therapist, through our Jane Booking Site, or by emailing the office at info@growthwellnesstherapy.com. During your first full session you’ll likely go deeper into talking about what you’re looking for in therapy, what your goals are, and talking about significant events in your life both currently and historically. From there it’s up to you and the clinician to decide where you want to take the conversation. (For tips on What to Talk About During Therapy you can check out this article!)
If at any point throughout the process, you feel that the clinician or service you’ve been matched with doesn’t quite fit what you’re after, feel free to connect back to our Intake team. We will be able to provide alternative options for you.
We’re hoping this takes a bit of the burden off and makes reaching out seem less daunting. As always, should you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at info@growthwellnesstherapy.com and we will be happy to assist!
