Meet Maddy - People Person, Child Therapist and Mental Health Educator

This interview originally published in our November 2021 newsletter.

What made you want to become a social worker?

Growing up I was always a ‘people person', I loved being around people and supporting them. But it wasn’t until a summer job where I realized that I really enjoyed the therapy process. At that job, I met with teens and young adults and we just talked! It wasn’t formal therapy but we talked about what was going well, what wasn’t and what goals they might have for the next couple of months. I loved doing this, so I kept on a school path that lined up with that experience.

What is your favourite go-to fall activity?

My go-to fall activity is anything outside with a toque, vest and a scarf! I also really like visiting the areas near Toronto that experience faster and more intense fall colours!

What areas or approaches are you passionate about?

I am truly passionate about being in trauma-informed therapy as well as in other areas such as teaching and health care! I believe it is important for when I meet with people in a therapy session, I hold space and acknowledge the impact trauma may have on someone's life.

Do you have a regular wellness practice that promotes balance in your life?

I personally find that cleaning and journaling are great ways for me to find some balance! I also really value spending time with my friends and family!
